Today, we continue with how to make a fresh start this year. Grab a Bible and turn to Psalm 51. Remember how I said David loved God with his whole heart? Well he did, but he also messed up big time!! He had stolen a man’s wife and then had the man killed. Wow, doesn’t sound good. When his sin was told to him, David truly wanted to make a change. How could he do that with messing up so horribly? That is what we are discussing today. Let’s look at Psalm 51:1-6.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving kindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight- that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
First thing that David realizes is that forgiveness is available. Yes, all is not lost!!! You can be forgiven!! Maybe your sin isn’t adultery or murder, but please realize that sin is sin and you still need to ask for forgiveness. God is merciful and forgiving when asked. He also realized that not only had he sinned against Bathsheba and Uriah, but most importantly God!! His ultimate transgression was against God. He also acknowledges that he was born a sinner. His sin was of his own making. We must not blame others or even God for our wrongdoing. God made us beings with the ability to make choices. For the most part, we make bad choices; hence, the need for forgiveness. Therefore, in order to start again, acknowledge or confess your sin and ask for forgiveness.
Therefore, our first step is to realize our need for forgiveness. Start this year with a clean heart by confessing your wrongdoings and asking for forgiveness. Go one step further. If you have wronged other people, ask forgiveness from those people. This is so humbling and requires strength that can only come from God. If forgiveness is not granted from others, do not be discouraged. God will forgive you and He knows when you try to make things right. Continue to pray for those who are unwilling to forgive. You are making some gigantic steps!! Doesn’t it feel great!!
