Finding Stability in an Unstable World

Bombs, mass protest, school shootings, global and domestic terrorism… These things seem ripped right out of the pages of a horror book. However, these are the topics that dominate our nightly news. We are engulfed daily with the horrific images of such sad chaos. Many of us go through our normal daily routines, however, with an edge of uneasiness. Our world feels as if it may implode upon itself at any minute. Along with the chaotic nature of events, our society has fallen victim to moral decay, according to Biblical standards. As parents, it may even make us pray harder than ever for our growing children as they face the uncertain future. However, there is a stability that can be found to help us maneuver with ease through each passing day.

stability

Stability through the Infallible Word of God.

The absolute truth that is found in the Word of God is a comfort in unstable times. Even though our world values fads and trends that only last for a limited amount of time, the Scriptures holds truths and teachings that never change or gets old with the passing of time. No need for wardrobe changes, Scripture always fits and is always in fashion.

stability

Truths found in the Word of God helps us get through the rockiness of the world. They shape our way of thinking about events that happen every day in every part of the world. Take a look at the news tonight. Formulate thoughts about what is presented through the truth in Scripture. You will realize that the Word of God renews our mind to counter everyday circumstances through truth that is presented in Scripture.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

Stability through God being in control.

Things that happen on a daily basis may sometimes shock you. Outrageous crimes committed against children and threats of domestic terrorism attacks are just two headlines that make my spine tingle. However, our Heavenly Father is not and will never be shocked by the wickedness of people. Our world is fallen and depraved since the time of Adam and Eve.  But no matter how wicked things can get, God is in control. We may not understand why certain evil events happen. It may never be our place to know or understand. Yet, there is comfort knowing that God does understand these things.

A Biblical account of God’s control is found in Job.  The beginning of the book opens up a heavenly view that goes on behind the scenes and without Job’s knowledge.  Satan was asked by God to consider Job as a “blameless and upright man who fears God and shuns evil.” Satan then challenges God’s view of Job and thus begins Job’s misfortunes. By the end of the book, Job, through all the emotional and physical pain caused by Satan, declares that God is truly in control and understanding may be beyond his grasp. The point is that we do not know the purposes behind horrific events, but God knows. Even though Satan committed horrible atrocities against Job, God was still in control and even limited Satan’s actions by not allowing him to kill Job.

“I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, ‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’ I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore, I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:2-6

No horrific tragedy is beyond the knowledge of God. He is always in control, even if we do not understand the purpose. Trusting in God and His providential care should be our only focus. Consider Job; he came to an understanding that he did not have to know the purpose behind his losses and misfortune. He humbly admitted to the sovereignty of God. To find stability, we too must come humbly and submit to God’s sovereignty.

Stability through knowing that this is not our home.

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” Philippians 3: 20-21

As believers in Jesus Christ, the earth is just a temporary home. Our true home is in Heaven with Jesus Christ. Longing for our true residence, our focus shifts to heavenly pursuits. Stability comes to us knowing that this earth will one day fall away; and in heaven, we will worship God with the angels. Our bodies will be transformed and redesigned for our new abode. What a hope and a joy to have this truth revealed to us through Scripture. Stability follows when we set our mind on heavenly, not earthly, things.

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2

Finding stability in this crazy world is possible. We find it through scripture, God’s control, and in the comfort of knowing Heaven is our true home. Today when you encounter the uneasiness of this world, remember that God can hold us stable on our feet!
